Best Children's Books for Ages 3–5

A curated list of favourites - from big feelings to friendship, bedtime to a good laugh.

The best children's books for ages 3–5 do more than tell a good story - they open conversations, build vocabulary, and create the kind of quiet together moments that both kids and grown-ups actually need. Here are some favourites.

For big feelings

The Colour Monster by Anna Llenas - A beautifully illustrated book that helps children identify and sort their emotions using colour. Perfect for kids who don't yet have the words for what they're feeling.

When Sophie Gets Angry by Molly Bang - A Caldecott Honor book that follows Sophie through a big, fierce anger - and shows her finding her way back to calm. Honest and reassuring.

Big Feelings (Little Dude series) by Cara Zelas - A gentle, playful story about Little Dude navigating a big wave of feelings, with simple tools children can actually use. Perfect for ages 3–7.

For kindness and empathy

Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson - A quiet, powerful story about a missed opportunity to be kind - and what we carry when we don't take it. Beautifully written and genuinely moving.

Wonder by R.J. Palacio (picture book edition) - A gorgeous picture book version of the beloved novel, perfect for introducing the idea of choosing kindness even when it's hard.

Kindness (Little Dude series) by Cara Zelas - Little Dude explores what kindness actually looks and feels like in everyday moments. Simple enough for little ones, meaningful enough for bigger kids too.

For friendship

Enemy Pie by Derek Munson - A funny, clever story about a boy who learns that the best way to deal with an enemy might be to make him a friend. A classic.

The Invisible String by Patrice Karst - A reassuring story about the invisible connections that tie us to the people we love, even when we're apart. Great for separation anxiety too.

Friendship (Little Dude series) by Cara Zelas - Little Dude navigates the tricky, wonderful world of making and keeping friends. Warm, relatable, and full of practical social skills for little humans.

For bedtime and winding down

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown - Still the gold standard for bedtime books. Rhythmic, calming, and genuinely magical for little ones.

The Rabbit Who Wants to Fall Asleep by Carl-Johan Forssén Ehrlin - Part story, part sleep technique - this one is designed to help kids relax and drift off. Works brilliantly.

For a good laugh

No, David! by David Shannon - Chaotic, funny and deeply comforting for children who have ever been told no (so, all of them). The illustrations alone are worth it.

The Book with No Pictures by B.J. Novak - Proof that you don't need pictures to make a child howl with laughter. Read this one when you need a fun night.
